Practice marketing has filled this dental clinic waiting room

Marketing your practice beyond social media

Social media can help your healthcare practice stay visible, share useful information and build stronger connections with your local community. But posting regularly on Facebook or Instagram alone doesn’t guarantee a steady flow of new patient bookings.

Your potential patients don’t all follow your page. Many won’t see your posts unless they already know your practice or the platform’s algorithm chooses to show them.

That’s why social media needs to form part of a broader patient growth marketing strategy for your practice.

Help patients find you through search

When someone needs a dentist, GP, specialist or allied health provider, they’ll often start with a search.

Google still accounts for around 88% of Australia’s search engine market, according to Statcounter’s July 2026 data. However, patients are increasingly turning to AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini to research health concerns, compare options and find local providers.

Search optimisation now needs to cover three connected areas:

  • SEO to help your website rank in traditional Google search results.
  • AEO to help your content appear in direct answers, featured snippets and AI Overviews.
  • GEO to help AI engines understand, reference and recommend your practice.

This involves more than adding keywords to your website. Your content (on your website, Google Business Profile and on social media) needs to clearly explain who you help, what services you offer, where you’re located and why patients can trust your team.

Reach people who are ready to book

Social media often reaches people while they’re scrolling, rather than actively looking for care.

A Google study found that 77% of patients used search before booking an appointment. That’s what makes Google Ads so powerful. They put your practice in front of people at the moment they search for a service, such as an emergency dentist, local GP or specialist.

Google Ads can provide faster visibility for your practice while your organic search presence develops through search optimisation. Google Ad campaigns can also target a specific demographic, a range of suburbs, or promote specific services or practitioners, helping you reach people with stronger booking intent.

Build trust with useful content

Healthcare decisions rely heavily on trust, and regular educational content shows that your team understands your patients and can communicate clearly, without relying on sales-focused messaging.

Blogs give you the ability to answer common questions, explain treatments and address concerns in plain English. They help potential patients understand your approach before they contact you, and they also give Google and AI engines more useful, practice-specific information to draw from.

Keep current patients connected

E-newsletters help you stay in touch with people who already know your practice. With social media feeds often crowded, regular e-newsletters give you a more direct way to engage, or re-engage, your patient base.

You can share educational content, team updates, new services, appointment reminders and links to recent blogs. This helps maintain patient relationships, encourages ongoing care and keeps your practice front of mind between appointments.

Bringing the channels together

Social media still has an important place in marketing your healthcare practice. It can humanise your practice and keep your community engaged. But it works best when it supports a broader patient growth marketing strategy.

Search optimisation helps patients find your practice, while Google Ads reaches people who are ready to act. Social media keeps your community engaged, blogs strengthen credibility and e-newsletters maintain patient relationships.

When these marketing channels work together, your practice has more opportunities to be found, trusted and chosen by the right patients.
